Dilution of Precision (DOP): Why Satellite Geometry is Critical for Accuracy

Introduction

Imagine trying to pinpoint your location by listening to people shouting from known positions. If they're standing close together, their shouts don't give much information. If they're spread out around you, you can triangulate precisely. This is Dilution of Precision.

What Is DOP?

DOP measures how satellite geometry multiplies measurement errors:

Position Error = Measurement Error x DOP

If your receiver has 2 meters of measurement error and DOP is 2, your final position error is 4 meters.

Types of DOP

TermFull NameWhat It Measures
GDOPGeometric DOP3D position + time
PDOPPosition DOP3D position only
HDOPHorizontal DOPLatitude/longitude only
VDOPVertical DOPHeight only
TDOPTime DOPTime accuracy

What the Numbers Mean

PDOPRatingWhat You Can Do
1IdealPerfect geometry, rare
2–3ExcellentGreat for all applications
4–5GoodAcceptable for most work
6–7FairReduced accuracy, proceed with caution
8–9ModeratePoor, avoid critical measurements
10–14PoorVery poor, rough positioning only
15+Very PoorUnusable, wait for better geometry

How DOP Varies

By time of day: Satellites move, so geometry constantly changes. In 24 hours, you'll see periods of excellent and poor geometry.

By location:

  • Mid-latitudes: Best overall (systems optimized here)
  • Equator: Generally good
  • Poles: Higher VDOP, more variation

By constellation:

  • Single system: PDOP cycles every 12–24 hours
  • Multi-GNSS: Much more stable, rarely poor

Practical Tips

For Casual Users

  • If GPS is acting up, wait 15–30 minutes
  • Move to more open sky

For Professional Users

  • Always check DOP predictions before fieldwork
  • Schedule critical measurements during optimal periods
  • Use multi-GNSS to minimize DOP variation
  • Consider PDOP < 4 as minimum for surveying

Vital Points

  • DOP measures how satellite geometry multiplies errors
  • Lower DOP = better accuracy (1–2 excellent, >6 poor)
  • PDOP under 4 recommended for critical work
  • Multi-GNSS dramatically improves DOP stability
  • Check DOP for professional applications
