Apple plans major Siri overhaul to rival AI chatbots

Apple is preparing a significant upgrade to Siri in a bid to compete with fast-growing artificial intelligence platforms like ChatGPT.

According to Bloomberg, the company is working with Google to build a new AI-powered search feature, scheduled for release next year.

The system, known inside Apple as World Knowledge Answers, will use advanced large language models to deliver human-like responses and insights.

Executives describe the project as an “answer engine” capable of handling text, images, videos and real-world information such as locations.

Siri first launched in 2011, but critics have long argued that it lags behind rivals, despite Apple’s promises of regular improvements.

During its WWDC 2025 event, Apple admitted that its broader AI Siri update would be delayed until 2026, frustrating many users.

However, Apple’s shares rose by around five per cent this week following reports of the ambitious plans to strengthen the assistant.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s software chief, said the company is fully committed, telling staff it is “the most serious project” under way.

He revealed Apple has been in talks with outside firms to accelerate AI development, aiming to deliver more than first announced.

Adding further intrigue, Apple is rumoured to be testing an AI-powered robot, which could embed Siri with a human-like animated face.

Prototypes are said to feature Apple’s Finder logo, creating speculation that future devices may combine AI with robotics hardware.

Apple is also preparing to unveil its iPhone 17, alongside new Apple Watch and AirPods updates, at Tuesday’s launch event.
