WeTransfer clarifies AI policy after user backlash over terms of service update

WeTransfer has confirmed it does not use files uploaded to its service to train artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

The statement follows widespread concern from users after the company changed its terms of service, sparking confusion online. Some believed the new language gave WeTransfer the right to use personal files for AI development.

Creative professionals, including illustrators and actors, expressed anger on social media and threatened to switch to other file-sharing services.

In response, WeTransfer clarified its position, stating: “We don’t use machine learning or AI to process shared content, nor do we sell content or data.”

The company admitted the previous clause caused confusion, saying it was meant to cover potential AI use for content moderation.

The original terms mentioned using content to “enhance our content moderation process” with machine learning, and included broad rights like reproducing and modifying user files.

On Tuesday, WeTransfer revised the clause, now stating user content may be used to “operate, develop, and improve the Service” under its privacy policy.

The update takes effect on 8 August for existing users.

This is not the first case of public concern over AI data use. In December 2023, Dropbox faced similar criticism and clarified it does not use uploaded files for AI training.

Experts say vague terms and growing AI use pose risks. Lawyer Mona Schroedel warned that companies chasing AI innovation may push boundaries with user data.

She added that users might feel trapped if key services change their terms without clear options.
