Meta prepares for key AI glasses showcase

Meta is gearing up for its biggest technology event of the year, with chief executive Mark Zuckerberg promising a defining moment for artificial intelligence glasses. The company’s Meta Connect 2025 event begins on Wednesday evening, where new announcements are widely expected.

Meta, parent of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has not revealed many details, but speculation is already swirling about upgraded smart glasses. Zuckerberg has hinted this will be the year the industry learns whether AI glasses are ready to become the next major computing platform.

The firm’s current Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses already allow users to make calls, send texts, translate languages, and access Meta’s virtual assistant. Reports suggest the new generation, codenamed Aperol and Bellini, may push further with “Live AI”, allowing glasses to interpret what users see and respond instantly.

Another model, rumoured as “Celeste”, could include a built-in display for the first time. Though it may not launch this year, Zuckerberg could share more concrete plans. If successful, Meta’s third generation of smart glasses may follow the path of consumer devices that achieved mass adoption at this stage.

Alongside glasses, reports claim Meta is reviving its smartwatch project, possibly with a built-in camera. The device could integrate with glasses, enhancing Meta’s wearable ecosystem.

Though Meta shifted attention from the metaverse towards AI, chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth teased software updates for virtual worlds. Games or streaming in VR could appear, though no new headset has been confirmed.

All eyes are now on Zuckerberg to deliver.
