ChatGPT hits 2.5 billion daily prompts as AI use surges worldwide

OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT now receives around 2.5 billion user prompts daily, with 330 million from the United States alone.

Since its launch in December 2022, the AI chatbot has quickly grown, attracting hundreds of millions of users across the globe.

Initially popular for summarising complex studies and passing tough exams, ChatGPT has now become a daily tool for many internet users.

With recent software upgrades, it can offer fully personalised answers, adjusting responses based on each user’s unique needs and habits.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, revealed the figures ahead of a trip to Washington, where he will lobby for broader AI access.

Altman says AI tools like ChatGPT should benefit everyone, warning against limiting access only to large tech firms or wealthy users.

The platform’s growth has been astonishing, doubling in traffic since December and ranking as the world’s fifth most-visited website by May.

In April, ChatGPT reached 500 million weekly active users, sparking comparisons with Google, which handles up to 13 billion searches daily.

Although ChatGPT still trails Google, its growth is rapid, with Bank of America noting a 160% rise in visits in just one year.

Meanwhile, Google traffic is reportedly falling, and younger users — especially Gen Z — are shifting their searches to ChatGPT.

Some users even use the AI for therapy, raising concerns among experts about the potential risks and blind spots of such usage.

Altman is expected to present a “third path” at an upcoming Federal Reserve event, balancing AI opportunity with realistic caution.
