Autonomous military convoy debuts in Spain

Europe has unveiled its first fully autonomous military convoy after a final round of tests in Spain. The demonstration in Seville showed a fleet of robotic ground vehicles carrying out coordinated logistics with support from an advanced navigation system powered by artificial intelligence.

EU-backed project shows progress

The project, known as COMMANDS, brings together 21 European partners under the leadership of the Spanish defence company Sener. It is supported by €24.8 million from the European Defence Fund. The group aims to improve cooperation between manned and unmanned vehicles on land and in the air. It also seeks to strengthen performance in areas where satellite signals may be weak or unreliable.

AI helps vehicles navigate alone

The convoy in Spain relied on the Naviground system, created by Sener. It uses sensors, AI, machine learning, and 5G networks to help vehicles read their surroundings and move without direct human control. Sener has already tested the system on a logistics assistant and several tanks. In a recent video, the company described the technology as a powerful tool for improving how military units share information and work together.

Part of wider defence push

The test comes as Europe seeks to modernise its defence capabilities. The European Commission has identified autonomous drones, unmanned aerial systems, and AI-driven military tools as key areas where investment is needed. A planning document warned that Europe’s defence industry must be able to deliver new technology faster and at greater scale. Sener has not released further details about future convoy plans.
