Italy’s defence giant Leonardo has presented the Michelangelo Dome, an AI-driven system created to guard Europe’s vital sites during rising global tension. The project targets threats that are becoming faster, smarter, and more unpredictable.
New protection for critical infrastructure
The company says the Dome is built to defend major infrastructure, busy cities, and assets considered essential for both Italy and Europe. Leonardo’s chief executive Roberto Cingolani stressed that modern dangers evolve quickly, making innovation and cooperation crucial for security. He warned that defence is becoming more expensive than attack, pushing Europe to modernise.
Unusual sensor network
Unveiled on Thursday, the system stands out because it links sensors across land, sea, air, and space with cyber defence tools and AI. Leonardo claims this creates a wide shield able to detect and stop hypersonic missiles, drone swarms, maritime strikes, and hostile ground units. The system can also use predictive algorithms to forecast enemy actions and choose the most effective countermeasures.
European defence push
Europe has increased defence spending after warnings from US President Donald Trump about reduced American support. The continent also launched the Sky Shield Initiative in 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, to strengthen protection from aerial attacks. It remains uncertain whether Leonardo’s new technology will join this programme. CNBC reports that the Dome is expected to be fully operational by the end of the decade.
The unveiling marks a notable moment for Europe as it searches for stronger security tools against fast-changing threats.
