WhatsApp adds new privacy tool to block chat and media sharing

WhatsApp has introduced a powerful new privacy tool called Advanced Chat Privacy to stop others from exporting your chats or saving media. This update applies to both one-to-one and group chats, making conversations even more secure.

The Meta-owned messaging platform, used by nearly 3 billion people, says the feature will help users feel more in control. “It gives greater confidence that no one can take what people said outside the chat,” the company said in its announcement.

Once switched on, the setting will block others from downloading photos, videos, or files shared in a conversation. It also prevents people from copying the chat contents and exporting them elsewhere.

This latest update builds on WhatsApp’s strong privacy focus, which already includes end-to-end encryption for all messages. However, it comes shortly after the launch of Meta AI, a new tool that some users say raises privacy concerns.

Meta AI, which looks like a colourful circle in the app, is designed to help users with questions and ideas. Meta says it is optional, but the feature cannot be removed. Critics worry it could be used to collect personal information.

The UK’s data watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office, is now monitoring how Meta uses this AI tool—especially in cases involving children.

The new privacy option can be found by tapping the chat name, then selecting Advanced Chat Privacy. The feature is rolling out now and will be available to everyone in the coming months.
