A group of tech entrepreneurs has launched an ambitious campaign to reshape social media by eliminating billionaire influence. The ‘Free Our Feeds’ initiative aims to raise $30 million (€28.7 million) over the next three years to develop a decentralised network of apps powered by the AT Protocol. This open-source technology, also used by the Bluesky social media app, offers users unprecedented control over their data and feed algorithms.
Marc Faddoul, one of nine technical advisers for the initiative, emphasised the significance of user autonomy. “The AT Protocol allows users full control over where their data is hosted and which algorithms shape their experience,” he explained.
Bluesky, launched publicly in February 2024, has already attracted over 23 million users, positioning itself as a major alternative to X (formerly Twitter), acquired by Elon Musk in 2022. However, Bluesky’s current exclusive use of the AT Protocol risks creating another monopoly, according to Faddoul.
Recognising this critical moment in social media’s evolution, Free Our Feeds plans to establish an independent non-profit foundation to oversee development. The group seeks an immediate $4 million (€3.8 million) to kickstart this initiative.
The advisory team features experienced professionals from organisations such as Mozilla and the Social Web Foundation, underscoring the project’s credibility.
At the time of writing, the campaign had raised over $67,000 (€64,150) through online donations, showing early support for its vision. As social media undergoes significant transformation, this initiative could redefine the landscape for millions of users.
