Spotify restores service after global outage

Spotify has confirmed it has resolved a major outage that prevented tens of thousands of users from streaming music through its app.

The company announced that its service is now “back up and functioning normally”, but has not revealed what caused the problem.

Earlier, Spotify denied rumours of a security breach, calling suggestions of a “hack” completely inaccurate and misleading.

The outage hit around 13:30 GMT on Wednesday, according to Downdetector, a website that monitors digital service disruptions.

Over 20,000 users reported issues, saying they could not search for music or view artist profiles during the outage.

Users who had previously downloaded songs were still able to listen, but online functions, including search and streaming, stopped working.

The app displayed a message saying “something went wrong” when users attempted to load or find music, along with a refresh button.

Spotify acknowledged the issue quickly, responding to complaints on social media with a post saying it was “checking them out”.

Many frustrated users shared their disappointment online, with some urging the company to fix the problem immediately.

One person said they were at the gym and needed music urgently, while another was revising and called the disruption unhelpful.

A few users even threatened to switch to rival platforms such as YouTube Music or Apple Music if the issue wasn’t resolved.

Spotify, which has over 675 million users globally, has now restored all services and thanked users for their patience.
