Italy is negotiating a €1.5 billion (£1.29 billion) contract with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to strengthen its secure telecommunications network, Bloomberg News has reported. The proposed five-year deal, awaiting finalisation, has already received backing from Italy’s Intelligence Services and Defence Ministry.
Sources reveal that the agreement involves SpaceX providing encrypted telephone and internet services for Italian government operations. It also includes military communications in the Mediterranean region and emergency satellite services for crises such as terrorist attacks or natural disasters.
This potential collaboration reflects Italy’s intent to modernise its connectivity infrastructure while safeguarding critical communications.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reportedly built strong ties with Musk, an ally of Donald Trump, further signalling Italy’s alignment with Musk’s technological ventures. Meloni, who recently visited Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, expressed readiness to cooperate with the president-elect.
Last month, Reuters disclosed Italy’s plans to test Musk’s Starlink satellite internet system. These trials, set to begin in January, aim to assess Starlink’s potential for expanding high-speed internet access across Italy.
This initiative could significantly boost Italy’s digital transformation and military readiness, especially as geopolitical concerns grow. The deal exemplifies a broader trend of governments partnering with private technology firms to address national security and connectivity challenges.
If successful, this agreement would mark a major milestone in Italy’s digital strategy while deepening its ties with SpaceX and its billionaire founder.
