Google unveils AI-driven Pixel 9 phones ahead of iPhone release

Google introduced its next generation of Pixel phones on Tuesday, giving it an edge in the race to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into everyday devices. The event, held near Google’s Mountain View headquarters, came two months earlier than usual, signaling the company’s urgency to lead in AI integration.

Although Pixel phones only make up a small portion of global smartphone sales, they are closely watched as they showcase Google’s latest advancements in the Android operating system. Google designed the Pixel 9 phones as a central platform for its AI technology, believing it will revolutionize daily life and work.

“We are obsessed with the idea that AI can make life easier and more productive,” said Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president overseeing Pixel phones.

TThe new Gemini assistant, with ten different human-like voices, makes the Pixel 9 more conversational. It can handle a range of tasks, especially with access to users’ emails and documents. The phones also include a special chip to run AI services directly on the device, enhancing privacy and security.

The Pixel 9 lineup, which includes the standard model at $800 and the Pro version at $1,000, will begin shipping on August 22. Google is also offering a free one-year subscription to its advanced AI services, a $240 value, with the purchase of the new phones.

This early launch intensifies the pressure on Apple, which is expected to unveil its AI-powered iPhone 16 next month. However, analysts suggest that Google’s clear AI vision may challenge Apple in the ongoing AI competition.
