Google has announced major updates to its search engine, using powerful artificial intelligence (AI) to improve how we find information online.
Speaking at its annual I/O developer event in California, Google introduced “AI mode” for search — a new feature now available across the United States. This tool lets users ask questions in a conversational way, receiving direct, expert-like answers.
The rollout comes only months after early testing began with a limited group. AI mode is now powered by Google’s latest model, Gemini 2.5.
Soon, the company will test even more advanced tools, such as buying concert tickets automatically or answering questions through a live video feed.
Google also surprised audiences with a preview of Android XR smart glasses, made in partnership with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. The new glasses include a built-in camera and AI assistant — 13 years after the original “Google Glass” failed due to privacy concerns.
These developments come during major changes in how people use search. Google says 1.5 billion people now regularly use “AI overviews,” a feature that places summaries above traditional web links.
However, this shift has reduced clicks to websites by nearly 30%, according to a BrightEdge study.
Despite rising competition from ChatGPT and other tools, Google continues to dominate, receiving over 136 billion visits each month.
Later this year, Google will test more AI-powered tools in its Labs division, including deeper search features and a $250/month “Ultra” subscription for its most dedicated users.
