Germany prepares for cyber threats ahead of snap elections

Germany faces mounting pressure to strengthen its defences against cyber threats, cyber-attacks, and disinformation campaigns ahead of upcoming snap elections. On Tuesday, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser highlighted the urgency of this challenge while presenting the Federal Office for Information Security’s annual report.

“We must also protect our democracy in the digital world,” Faeser emphasised. She warned of increasing hybrid threats from Russia, led by President Vladimir Putin, as well as other sources. Faeser vowed to bolster measures to counter hacking attempts and false information campaigns.

The upcoming elections follow the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party coalition, which has heightened political uncertainty amid an economic slowdown. While there were no significant cybersecurity breaches during the EU and state elections in 2024, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

Faeser’s remarks underscore Germany’s commitment to safeguarding its democratic processes from digital manipulation and foreign interference.
