Fortnite is officially back on mobile devices in Europe. Developer Epic Games announced the launch of its own app store on Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android platforms, marking a significant moment in mobile gaming.
Epic Games Store is one of the first third-party app stores accessible on iPhones. It will also feature other popular games, such as Rocket League Sideswipe and Fall Guys. This launch is the latest development in Epic’s ongoing battle with Apple and Google over control of app stores and developer fees. The dispute saw Fortnite removed from both Apple and Google app stores in 2020.
The return of Fortnite to Apple devices in Europe is possible due to the EU’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA). The legislation enforces new rules to prevent tech giants from monopolizing digital markets. As a result, Apple now allows users in Europe to download apps from third-party stores, something it had previously resisted.
Epic Games stated that the DMA had enabled this return, but UK iPhone users will have to wait until 2025. Android users worldwide can now access the Epic Games Store.
Epic’s CEO, Tim Sweeney, praised the DMA and said this launch signals progress for developers and consumers. However, Epic remains critical of Apple and Google, accusing them of creating obstacles for third-party app stores.
