Airbnb App gets major upgrade to offer more than just stays

Airbnb has launched a redesigned app that lets users book extra services like spa treatments and personal training at rentals.

The new app is part of Airbnb’s larger plan to grow beyond just home stays, with $200–$250 million invested in this effort.

Dave Stephenson, Airbnb’s business chief, said the company now has a solid foundation to build on and expand its services.

Previously, Airbnb attempted to branch out, but it pulled back in 2020 as COVID-19 shut borders and hurt the travel industry.

Earlier this month, Airbnb’s shares dropped after it forecast lower-than-expected revenue, citing weaker travel demand from Canada to the U.S.

CEO Brian Chesky said the app has been rebuilt from the ground up to allow quicker innovation and offer more than homes.

A key addition is the “services” tab, now live in 260 cities, offering ten categories like catering, spa treatments, and fitness training.

These offerings are aimed at matching what guests often enjoy at hotels and resorts, Stephenson explained.

To ensure quality, Airbnb has added legal and vetting staff to check licences and certifications, which differ by location.

Most service providers on the platform have at least ten years of experience, according to the company.

Airbnb also updated its “experiences” tab, which now features 19 categories in 650 cities, from tours to live performances.

Special “originals” designed by Airbnb include exclusive events, such as a guided Notre Dame tour with a restoration expert.

New social features will allow users to see who else is attending events, and share media with co-travellers.
