Abu Dhabi to launch world’s first flying taxi service by 2025

Abu Dhabi is set to become the first city to launch flying taxis, with plans for operations by late 2025. In collaboration with US-based Archer Aviation, the city will host a fleet of electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) aircraft. These futuristic taxis, called Midnight, can carry up to four passengers and aim to reduce travel times by up to 80%.

Archer’s Midnight aircraft promise safety on par with commercial airlines and are 100 times quieter than helicopters at cruising altitudes. “Our goal is to transform urban travel, replacing hour-long commutes with flights lasting just 10–20 minutes,” said an Archer spokesperson.

The concept of eVTOL taxis gained traction in 2016, when Uber envisioned ordering flying taxis like ride-hailing services. Since then, over 300 eVTOL startups have emerged, raising nearly $10 billion. Archer Aviation, one of the most valuable companies in this space, sees Abu Dhabi as a launchpad for commercial success.

The UAE capital’s unique geography allows Midnight to fly much of its journey over water, reaching speeds of up to 240 kph (150 mph). The initiative is supported by Abu Dhabi Airports, the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), and other key players.

“This collaboration creates an ideal environment for launching Midnight,” said Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA. Regulatory and operational issues are being resolved in tandem, setting Abu Dhabi ahead of other global markets.

With up to five vertiports expected by next year, flying taxis could soon become a staple of life in Abu Dhabi, marking a new era in urban transportation.
